Prague Zoo 2015

For a change from museums we took the bus out into the country and went to the Prague Zoo. It was a nice sunny day and enjoyed the scenery beside the river and beautiful homes. I don't know if it was a holiday or something special for the zoo but the bus there was packed with parents and kids in strollers. It is a wonderful zoo for kids there are lots of interactive things and playgrounds. The gorillas were fascinating to watch.

Information
The history of Prague Zoo goes all the way back to the year 1881, when, on the occasion of the wedding of Crown Prince Rudolf and Princess Stephanie of Belgium, Count Sweerts-Sporck published an open letter in the newspapers calling for the establishment of a zoological garden in Prague. Prague Zoo becomes the first in the world to hand-rear a Przewalski’s horse. A buffy fish owl chick hatches for the first time in Prague Zoo. Prague Zoo is the only successful breeder of these owls in Europe. Prague Zoo successfully breeds 20 Komodo dragons and becomes the first to successfully breed the Texas tortoise, the slender mongoose and the spotted imperial pigeon. Birth of Prague Zoo’s 70th Rothschild's giraffe. World’s first successful breeding of the crowned river turtle and the rufous-cheeked laughingthrush – as well as Prague Zoo’s first successful breeding of the red panda.
Record number of animal births – 1,557 in 211 species.

There are 5000 animals and 650 species at the zoo, well organised over 69 hectares. The grounds stretch from a lush river valley up a steep, rocky escarpment to rolling meadows. The views at the summit are spectacular.
